Asperger Syndrome Symptoms

Each Child Is Unique

Asperger syndrome symptoms can be quite subtle and are often not recognized for many years. In order to detect this condition as soon as possible, it's necessary to become familiar with the red flags that point to a possible AS condition.

Asperger syndrome symptoms can go unnoticed by people who are not familiar with this pervasive developmental disorder. Children with AS are commonly high functioning and very intelligent. They are able to memorize facts with remarkable accuracy, physically, they appear to be normal.

The signs of Aspergers mostly fall within the areas of social interaction. Some families or teachers might simply disregard the red flags as general quirkiness and eccentricity. However, there are significant reasons for the deficits in social skills, and interventions can help the child build better interaction practices.

What is an easy way to detect the earliest signs of Aspergers?

Even though Asperger syndrome is difficult to detect, there are some early signs that a child might need to be evaluated. There's even a simple test that parents can do when the child is an infant to determine if further examination is in order.

The "tilt test" is a quick exam that parents complete independently.

  • Parents simply hold the baby upright, then tilt his or her to the left and to the right.
  • A child with Aspergers will try to keep his or her head aligned with his/her body.
  • A neurotypical child will try to keep his/her head upright.
  • Other early signs include:

  • The baby has a lack of response to his/her name.
  • The child might have under-reactions or overreactions to sights and sounds.
  • Repetitive movements that seem to serve no purpose might appear, and the baby or toddler can be reluctant to stop engaging in the behavior.
  • What are some AS signs to look for during childhood?

Asperger syndrome symptoms are various and difficult to pinpoint, but they normally revolve around difficulties in social interactions. Parents and teachers might find these signs in children and adolescents with Aspergers:

    • stereotyped, repetitive movements
    • inability to tolerate changes in routine
    • tantrums
    • inability to take turns in conversation or play
    • difficulty reading body language
    • inability to understand figurative language and humor
    • formal speaking style
    • avoiding eye contact
    • odd reactions to emotional subjects
    • rigid gait and odd posture
    • poor handwriting
    • difficulty navigating his or her physical environment
    • sensory problems and delayed motor development

Aspergers can show itself in various ways; consequently, it's crucial that parents and professionals understand that no two children are exactly alike.
